Flanges are one of the pipe fittings but they are mainly used for connecting pipes, valves, pumps, gauge, and other measuring equipment to form the piping system. They provide easy access for inspection, modification or cleaning and maintenance purpose. There are different methods to attach flanges to a piping system like screwed or welded.

Two flanges with a gasket in between them to provide a seal, the flanges joints are formed. There are different types of flanges are available to use in piping systems but the more common and highly demanded are 7 of them which we will discuss in this article. Now let’s check the various types of flanges.

Types of Flanges

Slip-On Flange

Slip-On Flange is one of the most commonly used flanges in the piping system. A slip-on flange is connected to pipe fittings or pipe by two fillet welds. Here one fillet weld is executed inside and another outside of the pipe.

The bore diameter of the slip-on flange should be larger than the outside diameter of the connecting pipe or pipe fittings.

Weld Neck Flange

This Weld Neck Flange is highly used for high pressure and high-temperature applications. Here the bore diameter of the flange is equal to the inside diameter of the connecting pipe. A weld neck flange has a tapered hub provides a smooth connection between the flange and connecting pipe. In this flange, the end of the hub is weld to form a strong connection.

Long Weld Neck Flange

This flange is somewhat similar to weld neck flange. The only difference is that the extension is provided on the tapered hub section. This flange is specially used for vessels, columns, and barrels.

Threaded Flange

Threaded Flange is used threaded section and screw to make an attachment with a pipe. This flange is highly recommended to attach two sections of pipes. Threaded flanges have various industrial applications like explosive gas pipeline, gas stations, and plant.

Socket Weld Flange

To connect the pipes with other pipes and other measuring equipment, Socket Weld Flange use single fillet weld outside of the flange. These Flanges are suitable for small-size and high-pressure piping system.

There are two more important types of standard flanges are Lap Joint Flange and Blind Flange. If you want to learn about these flanges then Contact Us and get free knowledge.

Are you heard the name Inconel Alloy, Monel Alloy, Hastelloy, and Nickel Alloy? , alloys are nothing but the types of nickel alloys, which are highly demanded in various types for industries like steam turbine power plant, medical appliances, nuclear power systems, aircraft gas turbine, chemical, and petrochemical industries.

Nickel is the most versatile metal element, alloyed with most of the metals. Depending on the percentage of nickel and other metal elements, different types of nickel alloys are formed and used in different industrial applications. Nowadays, most of the industrial production use nickel and its alloy to manufacture high-quality Nickel Alloy Products in different forms.

Commercially Pure Nickel

Commercially Pure nickel alloy is a low alloy that is highly useful in various industries such as chemical processing, food handling, and processing and electronics & electrical applications. This commercially pure nickel alloy is 99% pure wrought nickel offers good mechanical properties and outstanding resistance to corrosive environments. There are different material grades are offered by Sambhav Metal & Alloys such as Nickel 200 and Nickel 201.

Nickel 200 is most widely used nickel alloy particularly useful for maintaining product purity in the handling of foods and caustic alkaline, and synthetic fibers. Moreover, they are widely used in chemical shipping drums, aerospace and missile components. Nickel 201 is low carbon version of Nickel 200, typically useful for the caustic evaporators, combustion boat, and electronics parts.

Nickel Alloys

Varying the nickel, chromium and other metal alloys there are different alloys are formed including Inconel, Monel, and Hastelloy. Commercially pure nickel offers lots of benefits over a wide range of industries, but it can be more expensive, that why most of the industries introduce new types of Nickel Alloys to manufacture the products.

Monel 400 and Monel K500 is solid solution Nickel Alloy which can be hardened only by the cold working process. This Nickel Alloy exhibits excellent strength and high toughness over a wide range of temperature. Both these Monel Alloy are best suitable for chemical processing equipment, gasoline, freshwater tank, pressure vessels, heat exchangers and more.

Inconel is another type of Nickel Alloy consists of nickel-chromium and iron as main constituents that are mainly useful for applications which required resistance to heat and corrosion. There are various types of Inconel Alloys including Inconel 600, Inconel 625, Inconel 800, and Inconel 825, etc. They are extensively used in reactor water systems, nuclear applications, and heat treatment equipment.

Want to know about Hastelloy? Please contact us today and get complete information about Nickel and its alloy.

The name stainless steel, we heard many times in our day to day life. Stainless Steel Alloy is an integral part of our life. Stainless Steel is an alloy with minimum of 10.5% chromium with nickel and iron. As they have larger chromium content that acts as a thin layer of oxide to prevent different types of corrosion. If chromium content in stainless steel increases will increase the corrosion resistance.

There is a number of applications for which stainless steel alloy is used. So first we see the applications and then take a look at the various types of stainless steel corrosion. Stainless Steel is broadly used in various industries including domestic, agricultural, transport, chemical, pharmaceuticals, medical, food, drink, water supply, and many others.

The most common types of stainless steel corrosion are:

Pitting Corrosion: This is the most common type of corrosion. The thin layer of oxide is attacked by certain chemical species that reduce the chromium layer and forms the pitting corrosion. Chlorine ion present in chemical adversely reduces the passive thin layer and corrodes the stainless steel.

Crevice Corrosion: Oxygen is supplied on the stainless steel will make sure the passive layer of oxide formed on the surface. But many times due to tight crevices, this won’t happen therefore causing the vulnerable attack.

General Corrosion: Stainless steel is not uniformly corroded like any other ordinary carbon and alloy steels. But sometimes, chemical mainly acids, attacked the passive layer on stainless steel will corrode the stainless steel depending on the concentration and temperature of the acids.

Stress Corrosion Cracking: This is the rare corrosion occur in case of stainless steel. This corrosion is a combination of tensile strength, temperature and corrosive species like chloride ion, then it occurs. Stress Corrosion Cracking happens typically in swimming pools and hot water tanks.

Intergranular Corrosion: This is the rarest type of corrosion happens in Stainless Steel. If the carbon content in stainless steel is high and chromium combines with carbon to form Chromium Chloride and operate at high temperature then this type of corrosion happening on inside the stainless steel.

Still, there are more types of corrosion occur on Stainless Steel, like Galvanic Corrosion, if you want to learn more about Stainless Steel Corrosion then feel free to contact us!
